Movie/Fan Review: The Last Airbender

Avatar The Last Airbender Book One: Water

Avatar The Last Airbender Book One: Water

Simula pa lang na ipalabas ang Avatar: The Last Airbender sa Nickelodeon ay sinusubaybayan ko na ito. Una akong nahook dahil sa concept of “benders” na they can control the basic elements water, earth, fire and air. Mas lalo akong naengage sa panonood dahil sa story itself and how it was presented.  The jokes were well-timed and the action scenes were well animated. It was very detailed and it was made sure that no plot holes exists in the story. The pacing of the story was well thought of that it grew with the audience; from a monster of the week kind of pacing to a serialized format. It was one of the best animated series that really do comes along every once in a while.

Then came the movie.

The movie was based on the first book of the series which was “Water”. The series is composed of three seasons, or in the terminology of the series, books. Water was the first, followed by Earth and then Fire. Book One chronicled the journey of Aang and his friends on his discovery of what happened after he was trapped in ice for 100 years, acceptance of being the Avatar, and learning to waterbend.

As a fan of the series, I would be certainly be biased on how I would give my piece of opinion so I’ll divide my review for the movie itself and how it was adapted:

Movie Review:

The first thing that you would notice in a movie like this would be the effects, given as it deals with a fantastical nature of controlling the elements. That being said, the effects shown on how they bend the elements were amazingly executed.

However, Dev Patel as Zuko was ok. Napakita nya ng maayos ung struggle ng emotions as well as ung delivery ng lines (although crappy, we’ll get to that later) was amazing.

Now on to the writing and the plot. Well, the dialogue was crappy. Parang ang dami dami nilang dialogue na they can easily summarize naman sa isang sentence lang. Walang witty dialogue or scenes na intended for a young audience, seeing na ang target audience ng movie na ito ay kids, teens at young adults.  At andaming plot holes present sa story that even someone who didn’t watch the series would notice. At matatawa at madidisappoint ka na lang kung paano ipnresent or was not presented at all.

As a fan:

The fun was lost.

Ang storya ng Avatar is about the journey and camaraderie of the group. It wasn’t ONLY about saving the world from the Fire Nation. Yes, it was their ultimate objective, but the main showcase and driving story of the show was their adventures, the jokes, the witty dialogues, and the innocence and fun of being a kid, albeit with responsibilities and powers.

Aang was the happy kid who didn’t want to be an Avatar but ultimately accepted it seeing how the Fire Nation changed the world around him. He loved adventures and for the love of god, he was always smiling. Katara was not a sappy girl, na laging sumisigaw na “We waited for you Aang, you are the only hope” shit. She was strong, determined and can stand on her own feet and can handle battles of her own, which was shown Book 1 pa lang. Sokka was the life of the group, always making the jokes and the slapstick humor. But he was the master strategist, he was the thinker in the group, and he was the one always with the battle plan. Iroh was the happy-go-lucky guy. He wasn’t stiff like in the movie. He even jokes which made him a likeable character even if he was identified with the enemy. This even makes you wonder if he was one of the enemies at all. He was the Yoda of the series. Admiral Zhou was authoritative. He was to be feared as he not only possesses power, he also has the intellect to reckon with.

They cannot insert every scene, every dialogue and every event that happened in the series. But what they did was they took away the essence of the story. They took out the fun and the witty dialogues that was present in the series. The characters were also vastly changed to the point that they cannot connect with the audience. And the fans cannot even connect them to the characters in the series at all. I mean, who would connect with an all-powerful Avatar? How would you relate it to yourself? They lost that point in the movie. Yes, those who knew Aang liked that he was the all-powerful Avatar, but that was just his second character. His real character was he was this fun-loving kid who loved adventures, always smiling, and always caring. He likes to play around and he enjoys being a kid. That connected with the fans and what made the series popular and well-loved. This was how it was sold, and they failed to do just that.

Rating:

You’re better off with the series.
