They should have named it “Oliver Lee – Araw Mo Ito!”
The 9th Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention 2010”.
Aside from the Toy Conference, it was also a celebration of DC’s 75th Anniversary. So it’s a celebration of Toys + DC characters. Like I said, it was my day. And it got better and better as the day progressed.
Excited much? It’s a first, hindi ko naman tinatangging late ako palagi diba, hehe. Ann, Rodel and Ron will be running late naman. Instead of waiting and wandering around, umakyat na ako sa 5th floor ng Megamall, and guess what, andaming tao. So pagdating ni Zaide after 30 minutes, bumili na kami ng tickets amounting to P100 each at pumila.
Anyway, as soon as we got in, (need I say more na maraming tao?), it was a geek’s dream come true. Toys, comics, anime’s, and for some reason “encantadia” (when i saw it, I found out na major sponsor pala ang GMA7), flooded the booths of the participants at the Toy Conference. There were also shirts, accessories, and other fandom stuffs that were on sale or display. After stepping inside at since wala pang mga cosplayers to flash our cameras with, we decided to check on the booths starting from the left since madaming tao dun. The rule “madaming tao = something interesting is going on there” is applied on our libot.
We found out that the left side is dominated by booths selling action figures, comics, accessories and DVD/VCD cartoons. Kahit wala kaming pambili, e nakiusyoso na din kami and took pictures on items we found interesting.
For those that are tired and wants to take a rest, merong seats sa front ng stage (alangan namang sa likod) where you can watch the program that is being held. In between their programs/contests/presentation, ay may film screenings, which includes the fan made ones. When we got near the stage, they were showing a Mortal Kombat film. I think the MK Rebirth short film was shown.
On the area opposite the stage, there was a wall dedicated to one of the Filipino pioneers in DC comics. Along this side also serves as an area for the booths of our local comic book artists where you can buy their works and have them signed. I must admit, I am not familiar with some of their works. The local comics that I follow is Beerkada and Pugad Baboy (I wanna read and looking for the first issue of Kubori Kikiam). I frequently see their comics though whenever I visit comic odyssey. I think we need to revitalize more the comics industry in our country as we have a lot of talented story tellers and artists in our country. We need to bring back the glory days when reading Funny Komiks was the in thing (Go Combatron!).
Right beside the Artists booth was the booth for Jack TV. I was able to score a Stewie Griffin buttonpin and a Jack TV poster.
Now came one of the surprises for me. THERE IS A TOY STORY BOOTH! When Toy Story 1 and 2 came out some years ago, inaraw-araw ko ata ang McDo para kulektahin ung toys sa Happy Meal. I never even had them opened so imagine my rage when my tita opened them when I was in high school just because “wala kasing display sa tv”.
Anyway, the booth was made more special because the featured Toy Story character for the booth was my favorite – the Squeeze Toy Aliens!
So we walked around and stuffed ourselves with free Coke Zero. We also took some shots of the toys that were in display that day. Ooh, and not only toys but also booth babes! There were also cosplayers roaming around the area so we took their pictures and also had our pictures taken with them. Nakakabilib ung ibang cosplayers, talagang in-character. And the costumes were really made with effort. Here are some of the pics:
So we decided to have a quick lunch and head back agad kasi tutugtog ang Stereodeal. The drummer is my officemate and this would be the first time that I would be hearing their songs. I liked ung third song nila titled “Hypertime” (pahingi ng free cd, haha). Anyway, here are some of the band’s pix:
After the set and some presentation, the ramp walk for individual cosplayers finally started. There were 100+ players that were registered as contestants, but these are some of the cute and amazing cosplayers that were around that night.
I am actually forcing na myself to stop posting pictures, haha. Andami kasing interesting cosplayers that were around that night e.
Anyway, after the cosplay event, we also went to some of the toy exhibit being displayed in the adjacent room. The exhibits are toys amassed by collectors as well as statuettes and one exhibit even showcased the history of video gaming.
After going around, I decided to head back to the Toy Story booth to check it out again. Pagdating ko sa booth, meron naman palang mga t-shirts na ibinibenta so scratched out na si action figure (I realized na hindi ko magagamit un, hehe, the logical side of me is working overtime). So i bought one shirt for P200, not bad.
After buying a shirt, we decided to have our refill of free Coke Zero na hindi ko na alam kung ilang beses na kaming uminom. While walking, bigla kaming may nakitang babae na naka Squeeze Toy Alien hat (i wanted the hat). So bigla kaming lumapit at nagpapicture, hehe. She saw that I was carrying a Toy Story paper bag (I think friend nya or sumthin ung sa may Toy Story Booth) so she asked what I bought. I said that I bought the shirt with the Squeeze Toy Alien wearing a barong tagalog. In fairness, she stopped at nakipagkwentuhan sya samin ng matagal (oo sinolo namin sya, haha), kaya feeling close kami. At syempre, camwhore moment.
